The game’s story seems fairly straightforward: Players are stranded on the aforementioned island, which has been “corrupted by a strange antediluvian substance,” and they’ll have to use “powerful abilities and immersive first person combat” to fend off the crazed villagers and “attempt to cleanse the land from its demoniac possession, if such a task remains possible.” Right now, there’s no set release date for The Black Masses, though the game’s Steam page says that players should expect it to enter Early Access this spring.

Although the game is somewhat unfortunately named - though it presumably refers to the fictional Satanic ritual, we hope - it seems to make good use of the technology pioneered by the studio’s first title, the slightly absurdist sandbox Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator, which The Black Masses utilizes to render “hundreds of thousands” of enemies across the game’s “16 square kilometer island.” If hacking and slashing your way across an island filled with throngs of possessed inhabitants sounds like a good time to you, then you might be interested in Brilliant Game Studios’s upcoming co-op RPG The Black Masses.
